Course Description: In this course we provide students with the art historical, theoretical and critical tools to come to terms with the artistic production – the visual arts, especially - of the post-war period. In doing so, students get a better understanding of both the arts and the contemporary. Throughout the course students combine theoretical discussions on the status of art (‘What is Art?’) and the nature of periodisation (‘what is the Contemporary?’) with critical analyses of singular artworks by canonical artists such as Duchamp and Warhol, Nam June Paik and Gerhard Richter, Jeff Koons and Damian Hirst as well as visits to galleries, museums and exhibitions.
