Course Description: This module provides an introduction to Ancient Roman culture. It has two parts, running in parallel. Part A examines the rise of Rome from a small city-state to a global power. This part will concentrate especially on two key phases of Roman history: first, the political changes that took place under Julius Caesar and then Augustus in the 1st century BC, creating the system that underpinned the Roman Empire; second, the Christianisation of the Empire, which laid the foundations of European culture into the medieval period and beyond. It will also give a brief introduction to Roman society and some key features of Roman culture. Part B provides an introduction to Latin literature, focusing in particular on Virgil's celebrated historical epic, the Aeneid, very much shaped by the reigns of Julius Caesar and Augustus.
