The student will gain knowledge in:
• A master narrative of the major events in Middle Eastern history from
1800 onwards
• The complexities of the relations between the Middle East and world
politics at large
• The history of Zionism and the Arab-Israeli conflict
The student learns:
• How to apply various methodologies, such as Diaspora theories,
postcolonial theories and nationalism studies, on a specific case study
• How to analyse the ever-changing interpretations attached to a region
• To critically challenge common perceptions of the Middle East
The student will be able to:
• Study and interpret the relevant primary texts in their historical and
social contexts
• Analyse and contribute to scholarly debates on a selected topic in the
field of modern Middle Eastern Studies
