Course Description: This course is an introduction to the academic discipline of International Relations (IR) or International Politics. In the first part of the course, we will discuss the following issues: What is international politics? The actors in international politics: nation-states, international organizations, NGOs and others The meaning and purpose of theory in the social sciences and in International Politics, and its limitations The major theoretical approaches or schools of thought in International Politics We will devote most of the course to exploring two of the three major theoretical schools of thought in IR: Realism and Liberalism.
