Course Description:
This course aims to develop students’ media analysis and discussion skills through viewing classic British TV comedy and drama. We will be watching excerpts/episodes from Brideshead Revisited， Cracker， Pride and Prejudice， Lost in Austen， Dad’s Army， Fawlty Towers， The Remains of the Day, and other programmes. A secondary aim will be to introduce students to aspects of modern society and culture as represented over the past forty years of British television. Topics will include Social class， Industry， Heritage， Gender roles and relations， Sport and sports-related violence. For each topic the viewing materials will be supplemented by media reports on current developments in these areas. Discussion exercises will focus on the usefulness of drawing comparisons between contemporary British and Japanese society. The emphasis will be on discussion and analysis， but there will also be exercises in listening comprehension， dialect， dialogue， and vocabulary.
