Course Description: In this course students will be encouraged to think about the ways in which people from different cultural, ethnic, religious or social backgrounds communicate with one another, as well as the role of culture in influencing an individual’s identity and their notions of what is ‘right and wrong’ or ‘appropriate and inappropriate’ in their interactions with others. The course will cover differing notions of politeness, gender roles and non-verbal communication. Concrete examples of misunderstandings, as well as strategies for overcoming differences and avoiding conflict will also be discussed.
