Course Title: THE RISE OF CENTRAL BANKS : HISTORY AND POLITICS
Course Number: DSPO 25A37
Course Description: The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic understanding of the historical trajectory of central banks and of their inherent ‘political' nature. The lessons will explore the changing boundaries of their relationship with governments and financial systems across history, with a particular focus on the crisis of the 1970s, a moment in which they went through profound organizational, technical and cultural transformation. Since the 1970s, central banks have in fact increasingly drawn also the attention of political scientists and sociologists, which have attempt to demystify the dominant economic explanations for central bank independence and highlight the political, institutional and social factors behind it. The ultimate goal of the seminar is therefore to put this political and economic interaction in historical perspective and look at central banks as ‘inevitably political' actors shaped also by ideas and power dynamics.
