Course Description: The purpose of this course is to understand the contemporary history of Japan, which is usually understood to cover the period from World War II to the present. It is a period in which Japan emerges from devastation of the war to become an economic superpower. It is, however, also a period in which Japan experiences many setbacks, such as the bursting of its economic bubble, and natural disasters as witnessed in the events of March 11, 2011. It is also a period in which Japanese culture gains a wider international presence as seen in the growing popularity of its cars, electrical appliances, games, anime-characters, films, and food. Each student will conduct a short research project on a topic of interest and give a presentation on the topic.
