Course Description: This course introduces students to narrative-painted scrolls (emaki 絵巻) from the late classical and medieval periods. We will consider how text and image interact, how scholars approach emaki from a variety of perspectives, and how historical developments shape emaki and are reshaped by emaki. Due to the continuing pandemic and a shortage of large rooms on campus, this course will be available on demand. Students will be introduced to a number of masterpieces and their historical contexts. They will also examine and experiment with strategies for telling stories with images.
