Course Description:
This course covers the economics of financial institutions and markets as well as the role of central banks. We will begin with an overview of the financial system and introduction to money and its role in the economy. We then focus on (i) the behavior of interest rates, (ii) basic theories for stock prices, (iii)banks and bank management, (iv) the money supply process, and (v) the conduct of monetary policy.
Students completing this course will be familiar with 1) the basic economics of money, banking and financial markets and 2) money-and-banking issues in Japan. This class is targeted to 2nd-year undergraduate students or above. Graduate students with undergraduate majors in economics or finance are not allowed to take this course.
