Course Title: Diplomatic History of Modern Japan 1
Course Number:
Course Description: In this class, we will overview Japanese diplomatic relations from the Bakumatsu/ Meiji Restoration to 1945, with particular focus on their relations with the United States, China, and Korea. More specifically, we will see how, when the international order in East Asia was being transformed, Japan explored and established its position, turning itself into an emerging imperialist power in Asia. Through lecture, reading assignments, and discussion, you can not only increase your general knowledge of prewar Japan's foreign relations but also nurture your understanding of critical issues lying in current relations – such as Japan's expansionism, colonial rule, emigration, race relations, and the Asia-Pacific War.
