Course Description: In this seminar we study the role of international organizations (IOs) for global politics and the global economy from an international political economy perspective. Our focus will be on the major IOs such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the United Nations (UN). We will examine and discuss research on how these organizations operate, how they make decisions, and how they affect political and economic outcomes in their member states. The course will place an emphasis on the empirical and quantitative literature on the topic but we will also discuss theoretical research and the political implications of the empirical findings for the future of global economic governance in the 21st century.
