Course Description: This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to the study of multilingualism, with particular attention to the European and Spanish contexts. We will focus on sociopolitical concerns such as the relationship of language to cultural, ethnoracial, and national identities, ideologies about good, bad and ‘standard’ language; language policy; and representations of different languages (and their speakers) in public space. While our approach will be primarily sociolinguistic, we will also draw from other disciplines and approaches including history, demography and public policy.
