Course Description:
This module introduces students to sociological concepts and theories relevant to mental illness and mental healthcare. It critically explores issues such as culture and mental health, stigma and labelling, the psychiatric professions, the organisation of mental health care, and the patterning along class, gender and ethnic lines of mental health inequalities. The module seeks to foster students’ sociological imagination and to assist future mental health nurses to ask socially relevant questions as well as reflect upon wider social factors influencing the care of individuals.
