Course Description: In this class students will learn how to define and interpret key humanitarian concepts such as human rights, human security and the responsibility to protect. Students will also learn how to define democracy, and study trends in democratization over the last 100 years. Students will learn about the content of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the United Nations Charter in some detail. We will also consider the strengths and weaknesses of the UN Security Council, and discuss the possibility of UN reform. Which countries have the best records for respecting human rights, and which countries are the worst abusers of human rights?
