Course Description:
This course aims to introduce students to the bilateral influence of the East and the West on art. This semester is divided into three parts that cover different topics from different eras.
(1) Ancient times: Focus on the treasures of Shoso-in and Todaiji Temple or Buddhist art in Japan. One aim of this part is to encourage students to develop an interest in the traditional designs and symbols of Japanese art.
(2) Modern times: Focus on the visualization of "Arabian Nights". The main works we examine is an illustration by Walter Crane and Disney's Aladdin films. Based on them, we will consider Orientalism and Japonisme in art.
(3) Medieval times: The main topics are Japanese picture scrolls (Emaki) and manuscript illustrations of the Islamic world. At that time, we also compare them with the manuscript illustrations of medieval Europe.
