Course Description: What is the ultimate nature of reality? Is it made up of many different things (atomistic) or is it finally one (unified)? Is change illusory or is it fundamental? Is consciousness an accidental by-product of evolution or does the universe somehow "feel" itself (is subjectivity pervasive)? This class is an experiment in metaphysics (a general theory about reality). Since the time of Aristotle, Western philosophy has been enamored with the idea that reality is made up of substances or things. However, as the latest advances in science seem to suggest, reality is sometimes better understood as made up of processes and events than enduring things; reality is better described through verbs than nouns; reality becomes rather than is. What changes when we see the world as a process? Everything.
