If we would lay a new foundation for urban life, we must understand the historic nature of the city and distinguish between its original functions, those that have emerged from it, and those that may still be called forth (Mumford, 1961).
The course will examine the history of the cities and invite students to think about future cities' design. As factories are no longer playing the nucleus of urban organisms, how would our cities grow and continue to support our livelihood? By the end of this course, students will be assigned to discuss and imagine the concept or design of a new city that can cater to urban youth's needs.
