The module aims to introduce students to basic concepts and themes in the anthropology of health and
healthcare. It covers issues related to culture; body; pain; healthcare encounters; healthcare pluralism;
popular, folk and biomedical sectors; patient mobility and biomedicines in a globalised world; healthcare and
visible minority patients. By using illustrations from ground level studies of the day-to-day experience of
health and illness in both western and non-western societies, the module provides students with a fresh and
stimulating perspective on the ways in which human suffering is grounded in larger social and cultural
contexts.
