Course Title: The Belt and Road Initiative: Global Visions, Local Effects

Course Description: Since its announcement in 2013, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has attracted massive attention from observers around the world. As the most visible symbol of China’s international ambitions, and perhaps even the cornerstone of a looming Chinese world order, the BRI has usually been analyzed through a geopolitical lens, not without justification. However, this perspective does not fully capture the degree to which BRI implementation is negotiated in a complex web of Chinese and local actors, each with distinct interests in project outcomes. This seminar is designed to give students a more comprehensive view of the BRI and the many different actors behind it. It will cover the initiative’s origins as a „national strategy“, the range of domestic actors tasked with its implementation, early-stage results and challenges for member countries, and local perspectives on the BRI from major investment destinations.
