One of the central issues in political theory is the question of political obligation. Political obligation is the moral duty to obey the law of one’s country or state. If this definition is rather uncontroversial, there is however a cluster of questions surrounding political obligation that divide political theorists. If the state did not exist, would it be necessary to invent it? Given that there are states, what can justify the normative relation between citizens and state? Do citizens have an obligation to obey the law? When is disobedience justified and under what conditions? When is the state oppressive? When is civil disobedience justified? And conscientious objection? Can we distinguish between political corruption and civil disobedience? This seminar proposes to examine in depth these questions and compare the answers that different theorists have offered.
