Course Title:
French and Translation in Diplomacy
Course Number:
210CO2F200
Course Description:
Whenever cross-cultural communication occurs, the exchange of messages can soon become the cause of miscommunication and misunderstanding, creating funny and embarrassing moments at times. But when it comes to a message expressing the stance of one or more countries on an international issue, like in a joint communiqué for instance, its accurate translation is then of paramount importance. And although each language has its own particularities and uniqueness, it is the job of translators and interpreters to convey the exact, or at least, the most appropriate and meaningful message to each side so that communication can be facilitated and positions understood. In this course, we will work on different texts, speeches, communiqués and writings from the diplomatic domain. This class will be taught in French and in English, and we will try to apply a methodology to switch from one language to the other. This CLIL class (Content and Language Integrated Learning) will help you to get a glimpse of translation techniques and strategies while studying linguistic structures easily reusable in many professional situations.
