Course Description:
This seminar will be concerned with the notion of the aesthetic
education, first formalized by Friedrich Schiller, which is guided by
the belief that the
experience of art can transform the individual`s mental, sensory,
and/or spiritual faculties. After setting a foundation with Plato,
Aristotle, and Kant, we will turn to Schiller`s On the Aesthetic
Education of Man, where he proclaims that art, or the experience of
beauty, is the vehicle of human liberation,
ultimately leading the formation of a morally sound citizenry. For
the remainder of the semester, then, we will investigate how ideas of
the aesthetic
education evolved over the next two centuries, particularly in
response to more modern, avant-garde artworks.
