Course Title: Traditional Industries
Course Number: 27326
Course Description: This course examines major trends in Japanese literature and art from its beginnings to the modern period. It shows how Japanese culture developed in an intense dialogue with nature, and provides a context for how cultural production was embedded in an environment steeped in an awareness of the belletristic rhetoric of the past. Focusing on a close reading of Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons, a survey of Japanese literature, culture and art, as well as some traditional Japanese industries, we pay particular attention to the theme of 'nature' and the characteristic dynamics that have developed between the natural environment and the socio-cultural landscape in Japan.
