Course Description:
Crime 1 addresses the nature and purposes of criminal law and a review of some of the major substantive law provisions in Queensland. The course will examine the concept of criminal responsibility; and the elements of offences such as murder, rape, assault, and drug offences. It will also cover accessorial liability and attempts. Further, the course will examine defences and excuses, including self-defence, provocation, and mistake of fact. By the end of the course students should be able to understand some of the policy implications of criminal law, as well as be able to apply the law to a factual scenario to identify whether offences covered in this course have been established and if so, whether any defences or excuses may apply.
