This course introduces the academic study of contemporary international security issues, centered on US relations with major powers and recalcitrant minor states. The topics include causes of war and peace, the conflicts between the US and ascending China and assertive Russia, regional conflicts in the Middle East and Northeast Asia, global terrorism, nuclear deterrence and proliferation issues, and liberal transition. It will also discuss the current debate about the US grand strategies and foreign policies to maintain world order in the nuclear age.
