Course Description:
In this course, we will closely read works of modern Korean Literature from the 1900s to contemporary times in order to gain a deeper understanding of Korean literature, its people and society, especially from the perspective of gender. Representative works of Korean Literature by both male and female writers will be read, analyzed and discussed from works written during the colonial period, which was also the time when ‘modern’ Korean literature started to take shape, to works written in contemporary times which may be easier to relate to. We will also discuss how female (and also male) characters are re-presented in the works that we will be reading and the meaning of such representation.
