Course Description: This course is an introduction to semantics, which introduces students to the basic elements of semantics. More specifically, the meaning of expressions and sentences in natural languages such as English and Korean. We will be addressing the question of how it is possible for human beings to understand sentences they have never heard before. 1. We investigate contemporary semantics and some basic concepts in semantics such as sentences, utterances, and propositions. 2. We also study reference, sense, referring expressions, and predicates, etc. 3. We study basic knowledge of semantics and understand various theories of semantics and semantic terms. 4. We take a look at some potential problems of semantic theories. 5. We finally review trends of contemporary semantic theories.
