It is estimated that there are more than 5,000 languages around the globe. Each language utilizes a selection of sounds that humans can produce, and those speech sounds are uniquely structured in a language-specific pattern, specifically termed as a “phonological pattern”. Using various types of class materials (textbook, PowerPoint slides, audio-video clips), this course explores how speech sounds in English (as well as some other languages in comparison) are produced and perceived as distinct units and how they are organized in the linguistic system.
