Course Description:
SCST2009 Experimental Screens constitutes an introduction to the history, theory, and practice of experimental and avant-garde screen arts. This unit provides students with an opportunity to expand their knowledge, skills and conceptual development in both screen theory and practice. It encompasses the history, theory and practice of experimental film forms. Students are introduced to conceptual, non-narrative and structural forms of film and video production. From a critical understanding of these forms, students are encouraged to explore new ways of expression on screen. This is a project-based study unit that places equal importance on both conceptual development and skill acquisition. The unit emphasises experimental processes as sources of creativity and innovation. The unit exposes students to a wide range of experimental film and video forms both through the study of their history and theory as well as through practical exercises.
