The course explores key concepts in the study of mass communications. In doing so it considers the dynamics of a digital world and discusses the spread of information via various platforms. On that point the class will look at evolving technologies and their roles in the construction of popular/dominant narratives. We live in a world of smart devices, video games, social media and global media outlets which can and do shape social, political, and economic forces. The course will also consider the workings of media during the coronavirus crisis. It is hoped the topics covered in class can help students better understand and appreciate the power of the world’s media.
