Course Description: This course offers an introduction to the history of Africa south of the Sahara, while examining the possible echoes of old events in contemporary issues. Knowledge of the past (with examples taken from the vast continental space and over the long term) provides tools for understanding certain elements of the present, even if we must be careful not to fall into a utilitarian and teleological vision of the history. It will thus be a question of going back and forth between past and present, inventions, instrumentalisation, rebirths, traces.
