Rethinking Gender in Neoliberal South Korea This course aims to interrogate feminism’s resurgence--and its concomitant "backlash"--as seen in mainstream South Korean visual culture. We focus on visual culture not only to think through the ways in which representations of gender are shifting, but also to problematize the politics and practices of visibility that actively produce and sustain our understandings of gender. Are we, indeed, seeing new femininities in twenty-first century South Korea? How is visibility informed in an age of constant likes and feeds? What might such a proliferation of visibility shroud? Moreover, how does the growing cultural dominance of global postfeminism and neoliberalism inform and construct identities and subjectivities in South Korea? How does contemporary technology--rapid and popular--allow us to re- imagine gendered subjects? How, ultimately, can we critically engage with our current moment?
