Course Description:
This is a reading, writing, and discussion-intensive course that addresses the development of Korean society throughout the modern era. The class begins at the end of the Chos?n dynasty (1392-1910), examines the colonial period (1910-1945), traces post-Liberation division and war (1945-1953), and runs up to the present. Using primary and secondary sources, we will examine the history and processes of social transformation, focusing on the unique historical, political, social, and economic situation of Korea.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
-recognize the basic terms, key figures, and general concepts in this period of Korean history
-understand the concepts of social, economic, and political change in this transition
-identify and critique scholars’ perspectives and their methodology of argument and evidence
